ATV FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions

Introduction

This page is provided as a service to MTR site visitors. MTR can not be held responsible for errors contained in these FAQ's or any other section of this website. MTR strives to ensure that all our content is kept up-to-date. However, laws and regulations regarding ATV's and their use change frequently. Further, MTR is an all volunteer organization and as such time and resources are limited. Please remember that MTR is NOT offering any legal advice. We are simply trying to raise awareness.

Do I have to register my ATV?

The answer to this question is Yes and No. That is, registration requirements vary by state. As of 2005, Kentucky had no ATV registration requirement. However, certain public riding areas in Kentucky do require that you purchase permits or trail passes before riding. Indiana on the other hand requires that an ATV to be registered but only if you ride the ATV on public land or roadways. If you ride your ATV in Indiana only on private property, then you do not have to register it. All new ATV's sold after January 1st, 2005 in the state of Indiana will be required to be registered with the state.

The ATV regulations section of the MTR site provides some additional information on state registration requirements. It also contains links to the various state websites where you can research the current registration requirements for yourself.

Please NOTE: MTR encourages all riders to register their ATV if their state offers registration. In most cases a portion of the registration fee goes towards trail maintenance. Further, having your ATV registered makes it easier to access things like your VIN number in the event your ATV is stolen.

What can I do to be safer on my ATV?

That is an excellent question. Safety is every riders responsibility. MTR provides a page full of ATV related safety tips. You can visit that page by clicking here.

In addition to safety tips, you will also find a link to the ATV Safety Institute (ASI). ASI provides ATV rider training and has an impressive list of ATV publications available to ATV riders.

What does it cost to become a member of MTR?

Currently there is no charge to become a Class B member of MTR. MTR is a group of ATV riders that use this website to communicate with each other, schedule rides and to otherwise exchange information. MTR does offer a Class A membership which offers additional benefits such as discounts at ATV dealers, voting rights, access to different parts of the forum including a chat room and other things too.

Where do MTR members ride?

MTR members ride all over. We ride on public lands where riding areas and have been established and on private property when permission has been obtained from the owner. The vast majority of our rides are in the lower portion of Indiana (south of Indianapolis) and throughout the state of Kentucky. However, several times a year riders will get together and schedule rides to areas like the Hatfield-McCoy trails in West Virginia, Windrock Mountain in Tennessee, etc.

A full list of "local" riding areas is available on the MTR site. You can access the list by clicking here. You can also visit the forums in the planned rides section to see when the next scheduled ride is or to schedule one of your own.

Can I schedule a ride?

Absolutely! All you need to do it to register and then go to the planned rides section in the discussion forum. From there just create a new topic with a title like "Lynnville Ride - October 3rd" and soon others will be joining in.
